A day in the hills of Kasauli

The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the world of traveling. The situation was considerably good in the last few months of 2020 and the first two months of 2021 until COVID came with its second wave. In March 2021 I had to visit Chandigarh for my University purpose. I was there for 2 days only but I made the best of those 2 days by visiting one of the nearest hill stations to the capital city, Kasauli.

How we reached Kasauli-

Kasauli is 53kms from Chandigarh and it takes around 2 hours by car. We booked an Uber intercity and negotiated that he will bring us back to Chandigarh too. We started our journey around 11 am. The journey will continue through Chandigarh-Kalka road to Dharampur where you have to take a left turn. This road is comparatively stiff but the scenic view of the mountain range and the cool breeze will make your journey memorable. It will take around 20-25 minutes to reach Kasauli from there.

Places to visit at Kasauli-

Kasauli is a small hill station nestled in the laps of the majestic Dhauladhar range. This place was built by the Britishers as their summer retreat. The Christ Church is the best example of colonial architecture. The best way of spending your time in Kasauli is by enjoying the tranquillity and peaceful nature. You can visit the following places:

1.    Christ Church- Build in 1853 by the Britishers, this Church stands in the Mall road area and is well connected by road. The neo-gothic architecture of the church will leave you awestruck. The church is surrounded by a beautifully curated garden and big trees. The hide and seek of light and shadow will make the place dreamier. You can go inside and pray or sit for as much time as you want.

2. Manki Point- This place doesn't allow visitors for the past 1 year due to COVID. However, visitors can go to the entry point. Manki point is located inside the IAF station Kasauli and is the highest point of Kasauli. The top provides the most majestic and pristine view of the mountains and the Sutlej river. And if you are an Airforce brat like me the place will bring back some memories too. The legend related to this place is when Lord Hanuman was searching for the sanjivani herb for Laxman he rested his foot at this place. And hence there is a hanuman temple at the top and you can find ample number of monkeys throughout the hill station too.

3. Mall road- A hill station is incomplete without a mall road and its market. The mall road of Kasauli is a small area with shops and food joints on one side of the road. It is a perfect place for spending your evening or to have brunch with your friends amidst nature.

4.    The heritage market- The heritage market is few steps from the mall road and there are plenty of shops to get gifts, souvenirs, junk pieces of jewelry, and many more. The place is the heart of the town always hustling and bustling.

5.    The Gilbert trail- The trail is not exactly located in the city but outside the city escape. It is ideal for hike lovers. The path of the trail is rich with flora and fauna. If you love nature photography then get your lenses ready to capture the breath-taking nooks of nature.

6.    Sunset point- Yes, like every hill station Kasauli also has an amazing sunset point providing you a beautiful panoramic view of the whole valley and the Chandigarh city too. You will have to hike around 20 minutes to reach the sunset point by walk from the Mall road. You will not regret the hike. You will cross the Kasauli club and the place is worth stopping by. Its architecture and geolocation will leave you mesmerized.

There are few more places in and around Kasauli for tourists. My one-day journey consisted of the aforesaid places. If you are planning a hustle-free weekend get your car and visit this colonial paradise.

Places to stay in Kasauli-

There are plenty of hotels and resorts throughout the length and breadth of the city. Some of them are listed here-

1.    Kasauli Regency Hotel

2.    The Fern Surya resort

3.    Rustic Forest View Cottage stay

4.    Kasauli Castle resort

5.    Hill's pride resort

NOTE- Travelers are asked to travel after knowing all the current COVID protocol by Himachal Government. Safety before everything.

Happy traveling.
